Project Ishmael is an organization under the First Grace Community Alliance (FGCA) umbrella. Project Ishmael is a pro bono immigration legal program for children that seeks to meet some of the immigration legal needs of children in New Orleans through direct representation and education, support the diverse legal needs of women and children who currently live at Hagar's House, and challenge systemic injustices that allow children and their families to be separated, harassed, deported or incarcerated based on skin color or immigration status.
Service learning students will help with Spanish interpretation of client meetings and phone calls. Service learning students will also help with translating documents when needed. Students will also help with managing the Project Ishmael phone by answering and returning phone calls and texts.
Students can learn about the immigration legal system and how it impacts the immigrant community of New Orleans, especially children. Students can also learn about different organizations and resources in the community that partner with Project Ishmael and provide aid to the immigrant community. Students can learn interpretation skills as well by receiving training and practice of interpreting skills regularly.
