Café con Ingles is an outreach ministry of a Catholic Church and the Jesuit Social Research Institute (JSRI) at Loyola University New Orleans. The goals of Café con Ingles are to teach English to the adult immigrant members of Catholic Churches in New Orleans and to build a community of faith and friendship at the parish. English as a Second Language (ESL) classes meet for approximately 2 hrs in the parish’s school cafeteria after the conclusion of the 9:00 AM Spanish-language mass.  Before class begins, students and volunteer teachers enjoy coffee, pastries, and conversation.

What you do

Loyola service learning students will work with English language learners in small groups to help them develop the language skills to use English effectively to meet their needs and achieve their goals.

What you learn

Loyola students will learn about the lives of their ESL students, including the challenges new immigrants face in their daily lives, how they spend their leisure time, and some of the customs and traditions in their home countries. Loyola students will also gain a basic understanding of the methods and strategies for teaching English to non-English speakers.
