Nurturing Roots Parent Academy (NRPA) is a community-based nonprofit working to strengthen families, support youth, and create more equitable educational opportunities across New Orleans. We partner with parents, educators, and community organizations to advance literacy, leadership, family engagement, and educational advocacy while helping young people reach their full potential.

What you do

As a service-learning student, you’ll gain hands-on experience while making a meaningful impact in the community.

Depending on your interests and skills:

  • you may tutor or mentor youth
  • support literacy and leadership programs
  • assist with family engagement events
  • contribute to research and advocacy initiatives
  • help plan community events
  • create digital and educational content
  • collect and analyze program data
  • collaborate with nonprofit leaders on projects that address educational equity.

This experience is ideal for students interested in education, social work, public health, psychology, communications, nonprofit management, public policy, or community development.

What you learn

By serving with Nurturing Roots Parent Academy (NRPA), you’ll gain more than volunteer hours—you’ll gain real-world experience.

Students learn how nonprofits operate, build leadership and facilitation skills, collaborate with diverse communities, design and support programs, analyze community needs, and contribute to initiatives that create lasting educational change. Whether you’re exploring a career in education, public service, healthcare, policy, or nonprofit leadership, you’ll leave with practical experience, professional mentorship, and a deeper understanding of how community partnerships can transform outcomes for children and families.
