Founded in 2021, Home Is Here is a growth-stage grassroots nonprofit organization that cultivates systems of support with and for newly arriving immigrants in the Gulf South. We believe democratizing resources is a part of the movement for immigrant justice and abolition. We believe in a culture of partnership, collective liberation, and belonging where everyone has a valued place and power. Home is Here builds alternative community infrastructure with immigrants who arrive without family or community support and are criminalized, incarcerated, and excluded from government-funded systems. Our work focuses on organizing around the areas that newly arriving immigrants say they value most: Legal Aid; Housing and Relationships.
Goal of this position is to support Home Is Here NOLA's volunteer engagement and community organizing efforts by helping develop and grow our Young Leaders program. The student will assist with planning and coordinating meetings and events, brainstorming and implementing fundraising initiatives, recruiting and engaging participants, and helping build a strong community of young professionals committed to immigrant justice. The student will also support volunteer engagement by organizing and updating volunteer training materials, maintaining volunteer resources, assisting with orientation logistics, and helping improve systems that support volunteer recruitment, onboarding, and retention.
Students will gain hands-on experience in nonprofit program coordination, volunteer management, and community organizing. They will develop skills in event planning, meeting facilitation, fundraising strategy, project management, and volunteer engagement while learning how grassroots organizations build sustainable community support. Students will also deepen their understanding of immigration, refugee and asylum issues, and the role volunteers play in supporting newly arriving community members. Through this experience, they will learn about Home Is Here NOLA's work, the local immigration landscape, and how community members can organize, advocate, and build welcoming communities.
