The Harry Tompson Center is a day shelter for people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity. We believe everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect and to have their basic needs met. Utilizing an empathy-driven, trauma-informed approach, we strive to be a community center where supportive and educational bonds are forged among our guests, staff, volunteers, and supporters. We seek to foster a positive self-image and support overall well-being among our guests.
Students will work closely with staff to operate daily hygiene services that are vital to health and well being. HTC’s newly-renovated hygiene facility is filled with plants and bright colors where guests access showers, sinks, restrooms and laundry in a beautiful and uplifting environment. Students work on a team with staff and other volunteers to greet guests, distribute hygiene supplies, and clean/sanitize shower rooms in between uses. Students may also be placed at our telephone station where guests can charge devices and make phone calls in our telephone booths.
Through this service-learning experience, you will interact with unhoused individuals and get to know people’s names. Students will gain experience engaging with diverse populations and learn about the complexities of homelessness and its correlations with poverty, mental health, substance use, trauma, and inequity. Students, through interactions and offering direct service, will witness the strength and spirit of resilience embodied by many of our guests through their poignant daily interactions.
