The mission of Kinship Center is to serve as a haven of opportunity for seniors in the community who seek to continue independent, healthy, and meaningful lives. The staff, board, and participants work closely together with the shared belief that seniors are valuable resources who enjoy challenges and want to be leaders and learners. Our community-based approach delivers a better quality of life for seniors and their families/caregivers. Kinship Center provides daily exercise classes, skills learning, music class and more for people aged 60 and older.

What you do

Kinship values being a safe place not only for its members, but also for anyone who walks through our doors. We want your experience to be positive and personally enriching! If a student has special interests, programming ideas or any other insights, we encourage you to share with staff. We expect volunteers to engage with seniors (sitting, talking, listening) and to perform light supportive tasks (help with lunch duty, wipe down lunch/cafe tables, snap photos of activities for social media, help set up chairs, wash a few dishes, etc.). We appreciate students who have a generous spirit, a willingness to jump right in and an appreciation for seniors.

What you learn

Service learners will learn about the daily lives of older adults and may even become friends with seniors. Students can learn the skills needed to work in in the non-profit sector. Students will strengthen their communication and social skills through their interactions with staff and seniors, which are skills applicable to all future endeavors.
