STAIR is a nonprofit organization that provides free, one-on-one reading tutoring to second and third grade students enrolled in New Orleans area public schools. STAIR's mission is to improve the reading skills and self-esteem of elementary school students. STAIR has been active in the New Orleans area for over 40 years.
Loyola service learning are trained as reading tutors and assigned to work one-on-one with a STAIR student. Service learning students will work with the same child throughout the semester-long program. STAIR is offering both virtual and in-person tutoring for the Fall 2026 semester.
Service Learning students will learn about the New Orleans public school system, core literacy skills for early elementary students, and the emotional and intellectual development of younger elementary school children.
- 2nd, 3rd grade children
- People with low literacy
- Other staff members at our agency
All service learning students must:
- Pass a background check
- Attend and complete all training sessions
Virtual tutors will need to have access to the internet and a desktop computer, laptop, iPad, or tablet with a camera for the virtual sessions. Tutor Applications are due August 21, 2026
